Trusted onboarding is a secure enrollment process that proves a device is legitimate before it receives network access, credentials, or management rights. In practice, the device may be checked with certificates, hardware identity, factory-installed keys, QR codes, or an administrator-approved claim step. The goal is to stop unknown or tampered hardware from joining a trusted environment.
This matters in cyber security because many attacks begin with unmanaged devices that are easy to impersonate, misconfigure, or steal credentials from. For cameras, sensors, and other IoT systems, weak onboarding can let an attacker add a fake device, intercept provisioning secrets, or connect exposed hardware to sensitive networks. Strong trusted onboarding reduces that risk by enforcing identity verification, least-privilege setup, and secure handoff into normal operations.
