Trust layer

a system that controls and verifies access between connected services or organizations.

A trust layer is the control point that decides which connected services, users, or organizations are allowed to exchange data and under what conditions. It sits above simple connectivity and verifies identity, permissions, policy, and sometimes the integrity of each request. In managed file transfer, for example, the trust layer may govern partner accounts, keys, certificates, approvals, and logging.

This matters because many attacks target the relationships between systems rather than the systems themselves. If a trust layer is weak, an attacker can abuse stolen credentials, overbroad permissions, or misconfigured integrations to move laterally, exfiltrate files, or impersonate a partner. Defenders use trust layers to reduce risk through least privilege, segmentation, strong authentication, audit trails, and change control. In practice, a good trust layer makes automation safer by ensuring that every transfer is authenticated, authorized, and recorded.
