Trust-based system

A service that depends heavily on user confidence and identity claims.

A trust-based system is a service that relies on users believing identity claims, profile details, or reputation signals before they take action. In practice, that means the platform assumes many interactions are legitimate unless something looks suspicious. Dating apps, marketplaces, messaging tools, and other social products often work this way because speed and low friction are part of the user experience.

This matters in cyber security because attackers can abuse the trust layer without breaking into the network or installing malware. Instead, they use fake profiles, impersonation, and social engineering to earn confidence and move a scam forward. Defenders need controls such as identity verification, abuse reporting, behavioral detection, and rapid account takedowns. In a trust-based system, those fraud controls are security controls: if they are weak or slow, the platform can become a channel for deception even when no technical vulnerability is present.
