A trend reversal is a change from a sustained decline to a renewed increase in a measured metric. In cyber security, that metric might be fraud attempts, malware detections, login failures, phishing reports, or blocked transactions. The key idea is not the size of the jump, but the direction of travel after a long run of improvement.
Trend reversals matter because they can be early warning signs that attacker activity is returning, controls are weakening, or user behavior is changing in a way that increases risk. Defenders look for reversals in dashboards and risk indexes to decide when to tighten authentication, review fraud rules, or investigate unusual traffic. A small increase after months of decline is often more important than a larger one that happens in a noisy, already volatile period.
