Treasury is the finance function that manages a company’s cash, liquidity, funding, and outgoing payments. It decides when money moves, which accounts are used, and how payment instructions are approved and executed. Because treasury sits close to the payment rail, it is a high-value target for cybercriminals and fraud operators.
In cyber security, treasury is often affected by business email compromise, invoice fraud, and payment redirection attempts that exploit weak controls or rushed workflows. Defenders protect treasury by enforcing segregation of duties, approval thresholds, payee verification, and tight ERP integration so beneficiary data cannot be altered unnoticed. Clear interfaces and exception handling also matter, because a control only works if staff can interpret warnings and stop a suspicious transfer before funds leave the account.
