Transaction logging is the recording of system events tied to a business action, such as a login, payment, order change, refund, permission update, or admin action. Each log entry usually includes a timestamp, user or account ID, source address, action taken, and result.
In cyber security, transaction logs are essential for detecting fraud, finding errors, and spotting suspicious behavior. They help defenders reconstruct what happened after an incident, verify whether an action was authorized, and identify patterns such as repeated failed logins, unusual refunds, or rapid account changes. Attackers often try to abuse or hide inside normal business activity, so complete logs can expose account takeover, insider misuse, or payment abuse. Strong logging also supports incident response, compliance, and audit review, especially when combined with access controls, alerts, and protected log storage.
