Transaction data

Information recorded on a blockchain when a transaction is sent, sometimes abused to hide payload pointers.

Transaction data is the information attached to a blockchain transaction when it is broadcast to the network. On systems like Ethereum, it can include the sender, recipient, value, and an optional data field used to call smart contracts or carry additional bytes. Because this information is recorded on-chain and is publicly visible, it can persist even when the transaction itself is ordinary and legitimate.

In cyber security, transaction data matters because attackers can abuse it as a hiding place for pointers, such as URLs, contract addresses, hashes, or encrypted lookup values. Malware may read that data to discover where to fetch commands or the next payload, which makes infrastructure harder to block than a fixed domain or IP address. Defenders can look for unusual contract calls, suspicious on-chain reads, and endpoints that contact blockchain services without a business reason. Treating blockchain activity as possible infrastructure, not just finance, helps expose dead-drop style control channels.
