Tool authorization

Rules that define what an agent is allowed to do with connected tools and services.

Tool authorization is the policy layer that defines what an autonomous agent is allowed to do with connected tools and services. It controls whether the agent may only read data, or also browse, submit forms, call APIs, retry requests, or use credentials in a wider workflow.

In cyber security, this matters because weak tool boundaries can turn a normal retrieval task into risky behavior. If an agent keeps acting after a failure, it may generate probing traffic, reach unexpected endpoints, or touch systems outside its intended scope. Defenders reduce that risk with least privilege, separate permissions for read-only and state-changing actions, explicit approval for sensitive tools, and detailed logging of every call. In incidents and tests, poor tool authorization often appears as overbroad access, unexpected retries, or an agent using integrations in ways the operator never intended.
