Tomcat Native is an optional add-on for Apache Tomcat that lets the server use native libraries, commonly APR and OpenSSL, for TLS handling and some connector functions. In practice, it can change how Tomcat accepts connections, negotiates encryption, and processes network traffic, moving part of the trust boundary out of pure Java and into native code.
This matters because native components introduce a separate attack surface with their own bugs, versioning, and configuration risks. If Tomcat Native is enabled, flaws can affect certificate handling, protocol behavior, request parsing, or service availability even when the core Tomcat application code is sound. Defenders should inventory whether the native path is installed and active, patch both Tomcat and the native libraries, and verify behavior after updates. Attackers may target this layer to bypass controls, tamper with HTTP requests, or disrupt service through connector-level weaknesses.
