TiB

A data-size unit that can signal volume, but not necessarily confirmed theft or compromise.

TiB stands for tebibyte, a binary data-size unit equal to 2^40 bytes. It is larger than a terabyte (TB) and is used when precision matters in storage, backups, and traffic analysis. In security work, exact units help teams compare logs, estimate exposure, and measure how much data may have moved or been staged.

In ransomware and extortion cases, a claimed size such as 4.2 TiB can be used to create pressure, but the number alone does not prove theft, compromise, or even that the data exists. Defenders should treat the figure as a lead, then verify it against endpoint telemetry, cloud audit logs, archive creation, and outbound transfer records. TiB is useful for assessing volume, but not for confirming the truth of an attacker’s claim.
