Threat validation is the process of reviewing available evidence to decide whether a security claim is credible. The claim may come from a ransomware post, an alert, a user report, or an internal detection. Validation asks a simple question: do the logs, telemetry, files, or system behavior actually support the allegation?
This matters because cyber threats are often overstated, misidentified, or deliberately exaggerated to pressure victims. A named target, a hash, or a screenshot may look convincing, but none of those alone proves compromise. Defenders use threat validation to separate rumor from real risk, prioritize response work, and avoid wasting time on false leads. In practice, analysts compare claims against authentication logs, endpoint events, network traffic, configuration changes, and data loss indicators. Good validation supports accurate incident response, while weak validation can lead to missed attacks or unnecessary panic.
