Threat monitoring is the continuous tracking of hostile chatter, suspicious claims, and other attacker-adjacent signals to spot early warning signs of compromise. It includes watching ransomware forums, leak sites, social channels, malware chatter, and internal telemetry for names, hashes, victim references, or tactics that suggest a real threat may be forming.
In cyber security, threat monitoring matters because attackers often reveal intent before they execute. A claim, for example, may not prove a breach, but it can still help defenders prioritize verification: checking endpoint alerts, unusual logins, data exfiltration indicators, and exposure of sensitive systems. Good monitoring turns noisy, incomplete reports into actionable intelligence, helping teams separate confirmed incidents from unverified allegations and respond faster to genuine risk.
