Third-party endpoint

An external server or service that receives data outside the original user-facing platform.

A third-party endpoint is an external server, API, or service that receives data outside the original platform a user is interacting with. In practice, it may be an upstream model provider, a payment processor, a telemetry service, or a support tool that handles part of a request behind the scenes. Users may only see one interface, but their data can pass through several endpoints before a response returns.

This matters in cyber security because every extra endpoint expands the trust boundary. Each hop may create logs, store metadata, or expose content to different operators and retention rules. In attacks, third-party endpoints are often abused for data exfiltration, webhook abuse, or malicious redirect chains. In defenses, organizations reduce risk by inventorying outbound connections, reviewing vendor data handling, using allowlists, and minimizing sensitive data sent to external services.
