Texture mapping

Applying 2D images to 3D surfaces to make them appear detailed.

Texture mapping is a 3D graphics technique that applies a 2D image, or texture, to the surface of a polygon so the model looks detailed without needing extra geometry. It is how a flat wall can show bricks, a character can have clothing patterns, and a vehicle can look painted and worn.

In cyber security, texture mapping matters because it sits inside the file parsers and rendering code used by games, VR apps, CAD tools, and other graphics software. Attackers may target those asset loaders with malformed image or model files to trigger crashes, memory corruption, or other parser bugs. Defenders test texture handling carefully, sandbox untrusted assets, and keep graphics libraries patched, because a realistic-looking texture file can still be a delivery path for a vulnerability.
