Text editor

Software used to create and edit plain text, code, and configuration files.

A text editor is software used to create and modify plain text, code, and configuration files. Unlike word processors, it usually keeps formatting minimal, which makes it ideal for source code, shell scripts, logs, and system settings. In Unix-like environments, editors such as Emacs and vi are part of the everyday operator toolkit.

In cybersecurity, text editors matter because they sit close to sensitive assets. Administrators use them to change service configs, review scripts, and patch automation. That makes trust important: a mistake in a file edit can break a service, and an unsafe extension or macro can expand the editor’s role beyond simple editing. Good practice is to know which files are being changed, use version control where possible, and limit editor features to what the environment actually needs.
