Text adventure

An interactive fiction format driven by reading, choices, and player input.

A text adventure is an interactive fiction format where the player reads short descriptions, then responds with commands or choices to move the story forward. The interface is usually text-only, so the experience depends on parsing input and changing game state rather than graphics. This makes text adventures simple, portable, and easy to run on terminals, browsers, and embedded devices.

In cyber security, the format matters because it is a clear example of a state-driven user interface: each input changes what the system accepts next. Defenders use text-adventure style flows for training, simulations, and guided exercises that teach users how to make decisions under uncertainty. Attackers can borrow the same structure in phishing or lure pages, using step-by-step prompts to keep targets engaged while collecting credentials or pushing them toward unsafe actions. For security teams, the lesson is to treat any narrative, choice-based interface as a system that still needs input validation, trust boundaries, and careful content review.
