Terminal workflow

Commands and tools used directly from a developer’s command-line environment.

A terminal workflow is the set of commands, scripts, and tools a developer runs directly from the command line. It is the control layer where code is built, tested, scanned, and committed, often through shells, package managers, linters, and security plugins. In cybersecurity, this matters because the terminal is where many high-trust actions happen: a single command can expose secrets, alter dependencies, or launch an automated check against a repository.

Attackers target terminal workflows by tricking users into pasting malicious commands, installing tampered tools, or executing unsafe build scripts. Defenders use the same environment to improve security with static analysis, secret scanning, policy checks, and pre-commit validation. Because terminal tools can see source code and environment variables, access control and careful review are essential. A secure terminal workflow helps catch issues early, but it should support, not replace, human judgment.
