A terminal agent is an AI tool that works through a shell-like interface, where it can read files, issue commands, and interpret system output. Unlike a simple chatbot, it can act on real system data when permissions allow it, which makes it useful for automation, troubleshooting, and scripted workflows.
In cyber security, terminal agents matter because they can speed up both defense and abuse. Administrators may use them to inspect logs, triage alerts, or generate maintenance commands. Attackers may use the same capabilities to enumerate systems, process stolen data, automate credential workflows, or chain commands faster than a human operator working manually. The main risk is not that the model is fully autonomous, but that it can reduce friction in an intrusion. For that reason, terminal agents should be treated like privileged tools: restrict access, log sessions, limit file and command scope, and monitor what they can touch.
