Tenant separation

Controls that keep one customer’s data, logs, and operations isolated from another’s.

Tenant separation is the set of technical and operational controls that keep one customer’s data, logs, configurations, and administrative actions isolated from another’s in a shared platform. It is essential in cloud services, managed security providers, and SaaS systems where many clients use the same infrastructure but must not see or influence each other’s records.

Strong tenant separation reduces blast radius. If it fails, a mistake or compromise in one account can expose another customer’s data, monitoring alerts, tickets, or security settings. Attackers may try to bypass it through broken access control, misconfigured roles, shared service accounts, weak identity checks, or cross-tenant flaws in APIs and logging pipelines. Defenders rely on tenant IDs, strict authorization, network segmentation, encryption boundaries, and audit logging to prove that each customer’s environment stays distinct and traceable.
