Temporal Data Problem

A mismatch caused when events happen late, out of order, or not at all during disruption.

A temporal data problem occurs when events are delayed, arrive out of order, or never arrive at all. In security operations, that means logs, alerts, authentication events, and job results no longer reflect the true sequence of what happened. A system may look healthy on the surface while important backend actions are still queued, missing, or being replayed.

This matters because cyber defenders rely on time to correlate activity, detect attacks, and verify recovery. If timestamps drift or events are lost during an outage, an attacker can blend into the noise, incident responders can chase the wrong root cause, and automated controls can make bad decisions based on stale state. Defenses against temporal data problems include reliable message queues, idempotent processing, synchronized clocks, replay-safe workflows, and post-recovery checks that confirm not just service availability but data integrity and event completeness.
