Template Hierarchy

The order WordPress uses to choose which theme file renders a page.

Template hierarchy is the decision order WordPress uses to select which theme file renders a request. For example, WordPress may try a specific page template first, then fall back to a more general one such as a single post, archive, or index file. This lookup process is a normal part of theme rendering, but it becomes security-sensitive when attackers can influence which file is chosen or how the path is resolved.

In cyber security, template hierarchy matters because a flawed selection rule can lead to path traversal or local file inclusion, where WordPress loads a file outside the intended theme structure. If the chosen file is a PHP file and the server executes it, the bug can escalate into remote code execution. Defenders should review theme layouts, file permissions, and PHP settings, and patch WordPress core promptly when template-resolution flaws are disclosed.
