A teleoperator is a remote human who can interact with or assist a connected system, usually through a live interface, camera feed, or control console. In cyber security, this matters because the system is no longer controlled only by software and local users; a person off-site may be able to view data, issue commands, troubleshoot errors, or override automated behavior.
Teleoperators appear in legitimate support workflows for robots, customer-service platforms, industrial systems, and incident response. They can also create a privacy and trust risk: sensitive audio, video, or sensor data may be visible to someone outside the home or organization, and access controls may be weaker than users assume. Defenders reduce this risk with strong authentication, audit logs, role limits, session recording, and clear policies on when human intervention is allowed.
