Telegram command channel

A messaging-based route that can be used to send instructions to malware.

A Telegram command channel is an attacker-controlled messaging path used to send instructions to malware or receive status from compromised systems. Instead of connecting to a custom command-and-control server, the malware checks messages, bots, or group activity on Telegram for commands. This can blend into normal traffic because Telegram is a widely used, legitimate service.

It matters in cyber security because it reduces the need for attacker-owned infrastructure and can make filtering harder. If a defender blocks a suspicious domain, the malware may still communicate through messaging APIs or over encrypted HTTPS to a public platform. In real attacks, this channel may carry commands such as download, execute, update, or exfiltrate. Defenses include monitoring unusual Telegram access from servers, restricting outbound messaging services where possible, inspecting proxy logs for abnormal API usage, and correlating endpoint activity with network telemetry to spot covert control paths.
