Technical constraint

a design limit that shapes how a system looks, behaves, or is delivered.

A technical constraint is a design limit that shapes how a system is built, how it behaves, or how it is delivered. Constraints can come from bandwidth, memory, hardware, protocol rules, latency, or the need to fit into a specific medium. In the teletext example, the format’s blocky graphics and compact pages are not accidental; they are the result of working within a narrow broadcast-style delivery path.

In cyber security, constraints matter because they define both risk and resilience. Attackers often target systems with tight limits, such as embedded devices or legacy services, where weak update paths and minimal monitoring make compromise easier. Defenders also use constraints deliberately: reducing features, limiting interfaces, and enforcing fixed formats can shrink the attack surface and make behavior more predictable. A system that is simple because of its constraints may be easier to audit, but it can also be harder to secure if those limits prevent patches or visibility.
