Targeted activity

Adversary attention directed at a system or organization, which may include scanning, probing, or attempted access.

Targeted activity is adversary attention aimed at a specific system, network, or organization. It can include scanning for exposed services, probing for weak credentials, reconnaissance of public-facing assets, or attempted access through phishing, exploitation, or abuse of remote access. The key point is that the activity shows interest and intent, but not necessarily successful compromise.

In cyber security, this distinction matters because defenders must separate being targeted from being breached. Targeting can trigger heightened monitoring, log review, endpoint hunting, and preservation of network evidence without assuming data theft or system takeover has occurred. In real attacks, targeted activity is often the first sign of a campaign and may be the only visible phase if defenses block it early. In defense, recognizing targeted activity helps teams prioritize assets, harden exposed services, and respond proportionally while attribution and impact are still being verified.
