Tab capture is a browser capability that records or streams the visible contents of an active tab. In Chrome-like environments, it may be exposed to extensions or web apps with special permissions, letting them observe what a user sees inside a specific page or browser session.
In cyber security, tab capture matters because it can cross a trust boundary. A legitimate privileged-access tool may use it for monitoring or support, but a malicious extension or compromised site could abuse it to collect sensitive information from admin portals, dashboards, or internal apps. Attackers may pair tab capture with proxy changes or forced tab opens to direct a victim into sensitive workflows and observe the results. Defenders should treat tab-capture permissions as high risk: review extension scopes, limit where they are installed, and watch for unexpected recording behavior in browser-managed access tools.
