System component

A core Android software area that helps define how the platform handles trusted operations.

A system component is a core part of the Android operating system that runs with higher trust than ordinary apps. It may handle platform services, permissions, device policies, or other functions that user apps are not allowed to control directly. Because these components sit close to the OS trust boundary, they are a common focus for security reviews.

In cyber security, flaws in system components matter because they can enable privilege escalation: code that starts with limited access may abuse a bug to reach sensitive operations, bypass sandboxing, or interact with protected data and services. Attackers often chain such bugs with an initial foothold, while defenders look for patching, tighter access checks, code hardening, and mandatory controls like SELinux to reduce the impact of mistakes in trusted code.
