Suricata is an open-source IDS/IPS engine designed for high-speed packet inspection. It analyzes network traffic in real time, using signatures, protocol decoding, and file and flow inspection to spot suspicious behavior. In IDS mode, it watches mirrored traffic and generates alerts; in IPS mode, it can sit inline and block malicious packets before they reach a target.
Suricata matters because modern networks move a lot of data, and defenders need tools that can inspect traffic without missing fast-moving attacks. It is commonly used to detect exploit attempts, malware command-and-control traffic, scanning, and policy violations. In defense, teams tune rules to reduce false positives and add custom signatures for their environment. In attacks, Suricata may be the control that reveals a compromise early or stops known bad traffic at the perimeter.
