Supply chain exposure is the risk that a problem at one organization spreads to its partners, customers, or logistics network. In cyber security, this can happen when attackers compromise a supplier, distributor, software vendor, or shared service and then use that access to reach connected businesses. The impact is often larger than the initial compromise because trust relationships, integrations, and shared credentials can widen the blast radius.
This term matters because many attacks target the weakest point in a business ecosystem rather than the final victim. Ransomware crews, data thieves, and fraud actors may abuse vendor portals, remote support tools, file-transfer systems, or third-party accounts to move between organizations. Defenders reduce supply chain exposure by mapping dependencies, limiting shared access, enforcing multifactor authentication, monitoring partner connections, and planning how to verify claims, isolate systems, and continue operations if a supplier is disrupted.
