Supplier assurance

Oversight meant to reduce risk from external vendors, integrators, and service providers.

Supplier assurance is the set of checks and controls used to reduce risk from external vendors, integrators, and service providers. It goes beyond procurement: organizations verify that third parties handle data securely, follow access rules, patch systems, and can meet resilience requirements before they are trusted with critical operations.

In cyber security, supplier assurance matters because attackers often target the weakest link in the supply chain. A compromised contractor account, insecure remote support tool, or flawed update from a trusted provider can bypass strong internal defenses. Good assurance programs reduce this risk through vendor reviews, security clauses, least-privilege access, segmentation, audit rights, and continuous monitoring. They are especially important for critical infrastructure, where one supplier’s failure can affect many connected systems.
