Supervisory controller

A system that monitors and manages operational equipment such as refrigeration or HVAC assets.

A supervisory controller is the control layer that monitors and manages operational equipment such as refrigeration racks, chillers, or HVAC assets. It collects status data, applies configuration changes, handles alarms, and often lets operators view and adjust the system through a web or client interface.

In cyber security, supervisory controllers matter because they sit close to physical operations. If an attacker reaches this management layer, they may be able to change temperature setpoints, suppress alarms, disrupt availability, or move deeper into the control network. Common threats include weak authentication, exposed remote access, command injection, and vulnerable web services. Defenses focus on segmentation, strong authentication, patching, logging, and limiting the controller to trusted administrative networks rather than the public Internet.
