Structured logging is a way of recording events in a predictable, machine-readable format, such as JSON or key-value fields. Instead of free-form text, each log entry carries consistent labels like timestamp, severity, user ID, request path, and error code, which makes it easier for tools to search, filter, and correlate events.
In cyber security, structured logs are valuable because they support fast detection and investigation. Defenders can spot unusual patterns, build alerts, and trace an attack across systems by querying specific fields instead of reading raw text. Attackers also exploit this trust: malware may send beaconing or exfiltration traffic that looks like ordinary logging telemetry, helping it blend into noisy observability pipelines. Good logging design, validation, and integrity monitoring help separate real application events from disguised malicious activity.
