Structured export

A built-in way for a device to send readings in a machine-readable form.

Structured export is a built-in method for a device to send its readings or status in a machine-readable format, such as a file, stream, or API response. Unlike a screen photo or manual transcription, the data arrives already organized, which makes it easier to log, analyze, and compare over time.

In cyber security, structured export matters because exported data can be trusted, parsed, and automated. Defenders use it for telemetry, auditing, asset monitoring, and incident response, while attackers may target export features to steal data, alter records, or blend malicious output into normal logs. In the context of a bench instrument, structured export is the difference between recording a display off-screen and receiving the reading directly from the device. When available, it improves accuracy and repeatability; when absent, people often fall back to visual capture or other workarounds.
