Structured cabling

an organized wiring system used to keep network infrastructure orderly and maintainable.

Structured cabling is an organized wiring system for a network or data center. It uses planned routes, labels, termination points, and rack organization so fiber and copper links are easy to trace, maintain, and replace. The goal is not just neatness: it creates a predictable physical layout that supports stable operations.

In cyber security, structured cabling matters because physical disorder can become operational risk. Poorly routed or undocumented cables can slow incident response, cause accidental disconnects, and make maintenance more error-prone. Attackers may also benefit from cluttered environments, where hidden taps, unauthorized patching, or simple confusion can go unnoticed longer. Defenders use structured cabling as a control by labeling connections, separating critical paths, and documenting changes, which makes troubleshooting faster and reduces the chance that physical work disrupts services.
