A statement of reasons is a written explanation that tells a user why a platform took an enforcement action, such as removing content, limiting reach, or suspending an account. In security and trust-and-safety systems, this turns an opaque decision into a documented control that can be reviewed, appealed, and compared. It matters because enforcement often happens through automated filters, policy engines, and moderator workflows, where the only visible output may be a takedown notice or account restriction.
For defenders, statements of reasons improve auditability and help identify patterns such as false positives, inconsistent policy application, or abuse of moderation channels. For attackers, the same mechanism can reveal which rule was triggered, helping them refine evasion tactics or test platform boundaries. In practice, a good statement of reasons is specific enough to be useful, but not so detailed that it exposes sensitive detection logic. That balance makes it an important part of platform security governance: it documents power, supports appeals, and creates evidence when moderation decisions need to be investigated at scale.
