State management

The process of tracking machine conditions so each action happens in the right order.

State management is the practice of tracking a system’s current condition so each action happens in the correct order. In a machine, that state can include position, mode, queued commands, active tools, retries, and whether a task is paused or complete. Good state management prevents the controller from acting on stale or conflicting information.

In cyber security, weak state management can create serious bugs. Attackers may exploit race conditions, session desynchronization, replayed messages, or broken workflow logic when a system loses track of what should happen next. Defenders look for explicit state machines, strong validation between steps, integrity checks, and logging that shows how the system moved from one state to another. In cyber-physical devices, including robots and plotters, accurate state tracking is essential because a small mismatch can cause visible errors, unsafe motion, or unexpected command execution.
