Stakeholder Management

The practice of understanding and aligning the needs, interests, and influence of people involved in a project.

Stakeholder management is the process of identifying the people who affect or are affected by a project, understanding their priorities, and aligning their expectations and influence. In cyber security, that means bringing together security teams, IT, legal, leadership, users, vendors, and sometimes regulators so that decisions about risk, access, and control are understood and accepted.

It matters because security work often fails when the right people are not consulted early. A policy may be technically sound but ignored if it disrupts operations or lacks executive support. Good stakeholder management helps approvals move faster, reduces shadow IT, and makes incident response clearer by defining who owns decisions. Attackers also benefit when stakeholders are poorly coordinated: phishing, social engineering, and abuse of trust often succeed by targeting the person most likely to approve a request or bypass a control. Strong stakeholder management is therefore both a project skill and a security control.
