SSD

Solid-state storage that uses flash memory instead of spinning disks.

An SSD, or solid-state drive, is a storage device that keeps data in flash memory rather than on spinning magnetic platters. Because it has no moving parts, it is faster, quieter, and more shock-resistant than a traditional hard disk. SSDs are used in laptops, servers, game systems, and removable media builds.

In cyber security, SSDs matter because they often hold operating systems, credentials, documents, and logs. If an SSD is stolen, lost, or sold without proper wiping, attackers may recover sensitive data unless full-disk encryption was used. Defenders also need to understand SSD-specific behavior such as wear leveling and TRIM, which can affect secure erasure and forensic recovery. While SSDs are not a threat by themselves, they are a critical data-bearing component that must be protected, encrypted, and sanitized correctly.
