SPV

Special Purpose Vehicle, a separate entity used to isolate assets, finance projects, or share risk.

An SPV, or Special Purpose Vehicle, is a separate legal entity created to hold assets, finance a project, or isolate risk from a parent company. In accounting and project finance, it can ring-fence debt, contracts, and liabilities so one business unit does not expose the entire organization to the same losses.

In cybersecurity, SPVs matter because ownership and accountability affect who controls data, infrastructure, and incident response. They can be used legitimately to fund data centers or other critical systems, but they can also make risk harder to see when obligations are split across entities. Defenders and auditors look for beneficial ownership, consolidation, insurance, service contracts, and patching authority to understand who can act during a breach, outage, or supplier failure.
