Spreadsheet exposure

A file-sharing or publishing mistake in which tabular data becomes publicly reachable or visible beyond the intended audience.

Spreadsheet exposure is the accidental publication, sharing, or indexing of a spreadsheet so that people outside the intended audience can view its contents. It usually happens through misconfigured cloud storage, a bad link, an open web directory, an email forwarding mistake, or a file that is uploaded to the wrong portal. Unlike a malware-based breach, the problem is often simple document handling.

It matters because spreadsheets commonly concentrate sensitive data in one place: employee records, customer lists, financial figures, or internal notes. If the file contains personal or regulated information, even an accidental disclosure can become a privacy incident and a compliance issue. Defenders reduce the risk with access controls, link expiration, classification labels, review workflows, and anonymized exports. Attackers also watch for exposed spreadsheets because they can reveal credentials, contact details, or operational context that helps later phishing or intrusion.
