A spend limit is an administrative cap on how much a workspace, project, or account can bill during a set period. Unlike a usage limit, which restricts activity, a spend limit focuses on cost. It helps organizations control variable cloud, API, or AI usage when demand can change quickly.
In cyber security, spend limits are a financial safety control. If credentials are stolen, an automation loop misfires, or an internal user runs large-scale prompts or API jobs, costs can spike fast. A well-set limit can slow or stop runaway billing before it becomes a major loss. Defenders often pair spend limits with alerts, approval workflows, per-team budgets, and usage monitoring so high-capacity services remain predictable and abuse is easier to spot.
