SPDX

An open standard for representing software and related metadata such as AI assets, datasets, provenance, licensing, and vulnerabilities.

SPDX, or Software Package Data Exchange, is an open standard for describing software and its related metadata in a machine-readable form. It can record components, licenses, provenance, datasets, AI assets, and known vulnerabilities, giving security and compliance teams a common way to inventory what is in a build.

In cyber security, SPDX matters because unclear software contents create risk. If a project includes undeclared open-source code, copied snippets, or generated code, SPDX can help document what was used and where it came from. That supports license compliance, vulnerability tracking, and build integrity checks. Defenders use SPDX alongside software bills of materials and software composition analysis to trace dependencies and spot risky or untrusted components. It does not prove that code is safe, but it gives organizations evidence they can audit, automate, and share across tools and suppliers.
