A spambot is automated software that sends messages at scale without manual intervention. It can post to email, SMS, social platforms, forums, or messaging apps by using accounts, browser sessions, APIs, or infected devices. In many cases, the goal is to move fast enough that human review cannot keep up.
In cyber security, spambots matter because they are often used to distribute phishing links, malware, fake promotions, and scam replies while hiding the operator’s identity. They can abuse trusted contact lists or compromised sessions to make messages look legitimate. Defenders look for abnormal sending volume, repeated message templates, new device logins, rate spikes, and account behavior that does not match normal user activity. Blocking automation, enforcing multifactor authentication, and monitoring unusual message bursts are common ways to reduce the risk.
