Source verification is the process of checking whether information is accurate, current, and supported by reliable evidence. In cyber security, it helps defenders separate real indicators from rumors, bad translations, fabricated screenshots, and AI-generated hallucinations. A claim may look polished, but if the source is unknown or the evidence cannot be reproduced, it should not be trusted.
This matters in attacks because threat actors often rely on deception: fake advisories, spoofed documents, cloned websites, and social engineering messages all work only when targets fail to verify origin. Defenders use source verification to validate threat intelligence, confirm exploit details, and avoid wasting time on false alarms. Good practice includes checking the original publisher, comparing multiple trusted sources, and confirming timestamps, signatures, and context before acting.
