Source code theft

theft of application code that may reveal logic, secrets, or infrastructure details.

Source code theft is the unauthorized copying or exfiltration of an application’s codebase. It can include application logic, build scripts, configuration files, API keys, environment settings, and comments that reveal how systems are deployed or protected. Because source code often reflects design decisions that are not visible in a running service, it can give attackers a blueprint for follow-on intrusion.

In cyber attacks, stolen code is used to find exploitable flaws, identify hidden endpoints, recover hard-coded secrets, and understand internal infrastructure. In extortion campaigns, thieves may threaten to publish code or sell it to increase pressure on the victim. Defenders reduce the impact by limiting repository access, separating secrets from code, using secret scanning and code review, rotating exposed credentials, and monitoring for large exports from development systems. Protecting source code is important because it can turn one compromise into many: a leaked repository may reveal both how an application works and how to attack its environment.
