Software marketplace

an online store where users download apps or extensions.

A software marketplace is an online store or catalog where users discover, download, and update apps, plugins, or extensions. In security terms, it is a trusted distribution channel: users often assume listings are safe because they appear in an official or familiar ecosystem. That trust makes marketplaces valuable targets for attackers who publish lookalike packages, malicious extensions, or repackaged tools that appear legitimate at first glance.

Software marketplaces matter because they can become an entry point into developer machines, enterprise endpoints, and cloud-connected workflows. A malicious add-on may not need to break anything immediately; it can collect telemetry, observe configurations, or request broad permissions that expose data and internal structure. Defenders reduce this risk by reviewing publisher provenance, restricting installs with allowlisting or approval workflows, checking permissions before installation, and monitoring outbound network traffic from newly installed software.
