SMC-D

A Linux shared-memory transport used for specialized intra-node communication.

SMC-D is a Linux shared-memory transport used for specialized intra-node communication. It is part of the SMC family and is designed to move data between peers efficiently by using shared memory instead of a traditional packet path. That makes it useful in high-performance environments where low latency matters.

From a security perspective, SMC-D matters because niche kernel transports still run in privileged code. If the logic that manages offsets, lengths, or buffer boundaries is wrong, a bug can become memory corruption in the kernel. Attackers look for those flaws to trigger crashes or local privilege escalation, while defenders focus on patching, checking whether the feature is enabled, and disabling it when the host does not need it. Even specialized paths deserve review because a narrow feature can still expose a high-impact kernel bug.
