Skill mapping

The process of translating a person’s abilities into structured categories that software can compare.

Skill mapping is the process of translating a person’s abilities, experience, and credentials into structured categories that software can compare. Instead of reading a CV as free text, a platform converts skills into a standard taxonomy, such as job families, proficiency levels, and related competencies. This makes automated matching, training recommendations, and workforce analytics possible.

In cyber security, skill mapping matters because it turns sensitive human data into a machine-readable dataset. If the mappings are wrong, outdated, or tampered with, systems can misclassify users, leak personal information, or make poor access and training decisions. Attackers may try to inject false data through APIs, poison profile records, or exploit weak validation in AI-assisted HR tools. Defenses include controlled vocabularies, provenance checks, logging, authentication, and human review for high-impact outputs. Good skill mapping improves trust; bad mapping creates a data integrity problem that automation can scale quickly.
