Signed update

An update package that includes cryptographic proof it came from an authorized vendor or system.

A signed update is a software or firmware package that carries cryptographic proof of origin, usually created with a vendor’s private key and verified by the device before installation. The signature lets the system confirm that the update came from an authorized source and was not changed in transit.

In cyber security, signed updates are a key defense against tampering and malware injection. They are especially important on devices with trusted internal control paths, such as ATMs, routers, and industrial systems, where a malicious update could give an attacker control over critical hardware. Defenders use signature checks, secure boot, and update validation to block rogue packages. Attackers, by contrast, may try to bypass signature enforcement, steal signing keys, or abuse poorly protected maintenance channels so a fake package looks legitimate.
