Shell extension

A component that adds functions to the Windows shell.

A shell extension is a Windows component that adds extra functions to the Windows shell, including File Explorer and its right-click context menus. Extensions can add menu items, preview handlers, icon overlays, drag-and-drop actions, or custom properties, and they are loaded dynamically when Explorer needs them. That makes them useful for productivity, but also a common source of slow startup, crashes, and cluttered menus if too many are registered.

In cyber security, shell extensions matter because they run inside a trusted desktop process and can influence how users interact with files. Malicious or abused extensions may be used for persistence, code execution, or hiding file-related actions, while poorly built ones can create reliability and attack-surface problems. Defenders review installed extensions to spot unsigned, obsolete, or suspicious entries, especially on systems where Explorer performance is degraded or menu behavior looks unusual. Auditing shell extensions is a practical way to reduce risk and keep the Windows interface predictable.
